Surah Al-Mumtahinah-60:4

Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim (Abraham) and those with him,

when they said to their people:

“Verily, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allah,

we have rejected you,

and there has started between us and you,

hostility and hatred forever,

until you believe in Allah Alone,”

except the saying of Ibrahim (Abraham) to his father:

“Verily, I will ask for forgiveness (from Allah) for you, but I have no power to do anything for you before Allah .”

Our Lord! In You (Alone) we put our trust,

and to You (Alone) we turn in repentance,

and to You (Alone) is (our) final Return,

What is AL Wala WaL Bara?

Al Wala wal Bara is the concept of:

Loyal, Allegiance, and Alliance to Allah subhana wa taala, Rasulallah Sallallahu alayhi wasalam and the believers, and

Disloyalty, Disavowal, and Hate for the disbelief of the disbelieving folk.

The Shahadah

The Shahadah is the declaration of faith; the statement begins with negation and is followed by affirmation;

“ASH-HADU ANLAA ILAHA ILLA ALLAH

WA ASH HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN ABDUHU WA RASUULUH.”

The English translation is:

I bear witness that there is no deity worthy to be worshipped but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.”

NEGATION

“I bear witness that there is no deity worthy to be worshipped

AFFIRMATION

but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.”

Evidence from Quran

Surah At-Taubah 9:23-24

O you who believe!

Take not for Auliya’ (supporters and helpers) your fathers and your brothers if they prefer disbelief to Belief.

And whoever of you does so, then he is one of the Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)

Say:

If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your kindred, the wealth that you have gained, the commerce in which you fear a decline, and the dwellings in which you delight … are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger,

and striving hard and fighting in His Cause,

then wait until Allah brings about His Decision (torment).

And Allah guides not the people who are Al-Fasiqun (the rebellious, disobedient to Allah).

Al Wala wal Bara is, as we see the absolute negation of the disbelief of the disbelieving folk and affirmation of the loyalty, allegiance and alliance to Allah subhana wa taala, Rasulallah Sallallahu alayhi wasalam and the believing folk.

The Kufr of the Transgressors (Taghut)

The negation we understand in Al Wala Wal Bara, is the absolute negation of Kufr (disbelief) and those who uphold such forms of disbelief in; lordship, worship or rulership:-

Surah Al-Baqarah-2:256.

There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path.

Whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah,

then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break.

And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.
