What is Qadr?
Qadr means the divine decree of Allah subhana wa taala.
Allah subhana wa taala has decreed all things into existence; things animate and inanimate, things which are known and unknown, time and space, as well as things which we have no knowledge of and which may yet come into existence.
Surah Al Qamar 54:49. Verily, We have created all things with Qadar (Divine Preordainments of all things before their creation, as written in the Book of Decrees Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz).
Principles applying in respect of Qadr
Qadr is based on certain key principles which require adherence to (without philosophizing about);
1) The Knowledge of Allah subhana wa taala (Allah subhana wa taala knows all things)
Allah subhana wa taala has knowledge of all things created and things to be created, before the beginning of time and after the end of time.
2) All of what is Decreed is written (Allah subhana wa taala has it written)
Everything that is and will be is written in aLawhal Mahfuz – The Book of Decrees. All that is to happen to us is pre-decreed and pre-ordained.
Surah Al Hadid 57:22-23
22.No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but is inscribed in the Book of Decrees (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz), before We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allah.
23. In order that you may not be sad over matters that you fail to get, nor rejoice because of that which has been given to you. And Allah likes not prideful boasters.
3) Allah subhana wa taala has given us Free Will.
Allah subhana wa taala has indeed given us free will, and the exercise of that Free Will. However, the outcome of the choices we make and yet to make is known to Allah subhana wa taala.
We are limited to time and space (24hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, with an orbital pattern around a Sun)
Allah subhana wa taala is beyond time and space, and knows what is yet to unfold,as He has created both time and space and is not limited by it.
Surah Al Kahf 18:29. And say: “The truth is from your Lord.” Then whosoever wills, let him believe, and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve. Verily, We have prepared for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.), a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them (disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah). And if they ask for help (relief, water, etc.) they will be granted water like boiling oil, that will scald their faces. Terrible the drink, and an evil Murtafaqa (dwelling, resting place, etc.)!
4) Allah subhana wa Taala knows the outcome (All things are created by Allah subhana wa taala)
Allah subhana wa taala knows the outcomes of our choices, the exercise of our free will. We cannot see beyond our present circumstances, our little view of time and space.
Allah subhana wa taala has knowledge beyond the current time and space.
Surah Al Ahzab -33:38. There is no blame on the Prophet (Salalahu alayhi wasalam) in that which Allah has made legal for him. That has been Allah’s Way with those who have passed away of (the Prophets of) old. And the Command of Allah is a decree determined.
Surah Al Anfal-8:75.And those who believed afterward, and emigrated and strove hard along with you, (in the Cause of Allah) they are of you. But kindred by blood are nearer to one another regarding inheritance in the decree ordained by Allah. Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of everything.
Surah At-Talaaq-65:12. It is Allah Who has created seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof (i.e. seven). His Command descends between them (heavens and earth), that you may know that Allah has power over all things and that Allah surrounds (comprehends) all things in (His) Knowledge.
As we have referenced in Aqeedah, Qadr is an aspect we accept, both the good of it and the bad of it.
Hadith of Gabriel:
When the angel asked what is eemaan, the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said ‘Eemaan is to believe in Allah His angels, books, messengers, day of judgment and Al- qadar the good and bad’
Many amongst us, sit back and expect a rain of gold ingots.
It is important to understand that we cannot sit back in an unfortunate circumstance and pass it off to qadr, Allah subhana wa taala has given humans free will and intellect to change our circumstances.
Therefore it is incumbent that all efforts are maximized to alleviate an unfortunate circumstance.
Efforts must be made on an ongoing basis and opportunities will always arise as the human condition always evolves.
It is Qadr, that the intellectual ability and skill has been blessed upon humans to change their circumstance.
Humans have a choice, Free Will, it Is either they make the choice to do something about their circumstance or sit back and do nothing to find a miserable end.
Go ahead and do something positive ! ! !
