Shirk of Omnipresence

Surah Al A’raf 54.

Indeed your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in Six Days,

and then He Istawa (rose over) the Throne (really in a manner that suits His Majesty).

He brings the night as a cover over the day, seeking it rapidly,

and (He created) the sun, the moon, the stars subjected to His Command.

Surely, His is the Creation and Commandment.

Blessed be Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)!

What many believe?

Muhammad Sallalahu Alayhi wasallam is haadhir wa naadhir

The concept of haadhir-wa-naadhir (presence and closeness) is in its essence Omni-presence and the belief that Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi wasalam is everywhere and is able to assist everyone everywhere being present and close-by. This is a gross misunderstanding of Quran and Sunnah

What does the Quran and Sunnah say?

Surah Al A’raf 54.

Indeed your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in Six Days,

and then He Istawa (rose over) the Throne (really in a manner that suits His Majesty).

He brings the night as a cover over the day, seeking it rapidly,

and (He created) the sun, the moon, the stars subjected to His Command.

Surely, His is the Creation and Commandment.

Blessed be Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)!

Surah Yusuf 102.

This is of the news of the Ghaib (unseen) which We reveal by Inspiration to you (O Muhammad Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam).

You were not (present) with them when they arranged their plan together,

and (also, while) they were plotting.

Surah Al-Anam-6:50.

Say (O Muhammad salalahu alayhi wasalam):

I don’t tell you that with me are the treasures of Allah, nor (that) I know the unseen;

nor I tell you that I am an angel. I but follow what is revealed to me by inspiration.”

Say: “Are the blind and the one who sees equal? will you not then take thought?”

Surah Israa

1. Glorified (and Exalted) be He (Allah) [above all that (evil) they associate with Him] [Tafsir Qurtubi, Vol. 10, Page 204] Who took His slave (Muhammad Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam) for a journey by night from Al-Masjid-al-Haram (at Makkah) to the farthest mosque (in Jerusalem),

the neighborhood whereof We have blessed,

in order that We might show him (Muhammad Sallalahu Alayhi wasalam

From the verses of Quran and Sunnah we have clarity of understanding ;

The first aspect which requires address is the aspect of omnipresence. In Islam this concept is not supported by Quran nor found anywhere in the Sunnah.

Allah subhana wa taala is not “Omnipresent”. Allah subhana wa taala is above the Arsh and is not part of creation as creation is finite. It is the knowledge of Allah subhana wa taala which is all pervading.

Allah subhana wa taala revealed to Muhammad Salalahu Alayhi Wasallam whilst on Miraj what are the happenings on earth in the grave of Prophets Musa alayhi salam,as reflected in the verses of Quran

We do not

  • liken the concept of Allah subhana wa taala being “above the Arsh” to that of what we as humans understand in creation.

  • compare anything in creation to Allah subhana wa taala.

  • ask ‘how’ is it that Allah subhana wa taala ‘rose above the Arsh’.

We accept it, as Quran states it.

Muhammad Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam, is therefore not haadhir wa naadhir, nor omni-present as claimed. The Ayaat of Quran are clear about this issue.

It is Allah subhana wa taala alone who knows al-ghaib (the unseen) and it is only Allah subhana wa taala who permits the messengers such insight, to the extent which Allah subhana wa taala determines.
